Speed-read any text.

00Speed-read

readz shows a text one word at a time, at the speed you choose, from 100 to 1000 words per minute. The focus letter of each word stays at the same spot, so your eyes stop jumping along the line.

Free during the beta. One Google sign-in, the same as memo.

Demo of readz reading this text one word at a time: readz shows a text one word at a time, at the speed you choose. The focus letter of each word stays at the same spot, so your eyes stop jumping along the line. Start near your usual speed, then raise it step by step. Move the slider and try it.

01Steps

How it works

Three steps from any app to the first word.

  1. Select text in any app

A browser, an e-mail, your notes, a chat: any text you can select or share.

  2. Tap “Readz it”, or share it

“Readz it” sits in the text-selection toolbar on Android. On Android and iOS, the share sheet works too. Or paste.

  3. Press play and read at your speed

Words appear one by one at a fixed spot. Start near your usual speed (300 wpm is the default) and raise it step by step.

Why it is faster.

In normal reading the eye jumps along the line. RSVP shows words one at a time in a fixed position, and readz marks the optimal recognition point of each word in colour, always at the same place, slightly left of centre: the word comes to your eye instead.

02Features

What readz does

Everything here is in the beta today.

  1. One word at a time

Words appear one by one at a fixed spot (RSVP), at 100 to 1000 words per minute, in steps of 10, 25, 50 or 100.

  2. ORP highlighting

The optimal recognition point of each word is marked in colour and always sits at the same place, slightly left of centre.

  3. Read from anywhere

“Readz it” in the text-selection toolbar on Android, the share sheet on Android and iOS, paste everywhere, or a link on the web.

  4. Read aloud, in your language

Built-in text-to-speech drives the display word by word, so what you see is always what you hear. Pick the voice language; it keeps playing in the background.

  5. Share a link, read the article

Share a web page and readz keeps only the article: menus, ads and footers are left out before the first word.

  6. Skip the small words

Optionally skip determiners, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions or auxiliary verbs, and read only the words that carry the meaning.

  7. Notes while you read

Flag a word, add a comment or a link without stopping; your notes stay with the reading session.

  8. Picture-in-picture

On Android, keep reading in a small window over your other apps, and start readz from Google Assistant.

  9. Never lose your place

The sentence is shown above the word. Tap any word to jump to it; seek five words back or forward, scrub, or restart.

  10. Make it yours

Word size, sentence size, ORP colour (eight presets), auto-start and read-aloud, all remembered between sessions.

  11. Your history, on every device

Sign in with the same Google account as memo: your reading sessions, saved texts and stats follow you.

03Input

Read from anywhere

Send text to readz from the app you are in. It opens ready to play.

  • Android

“Readz it” in the selection toolbar

Select text in any app and tap “Readz it” in the popup toolbar. It opens in readz, ready to play.

  • Android and iOS

    The share sheet

Share text from any app to readz. Share a web page's link and readz keeps only the article: menus, ads and footers are left out.

  • Everywhere

    Paste

Paste any text straight into the app and start reading.

  • Web

    A link on the web

Open readz on the web with the text in the address (a ?text=… parameter), and it is ready to read.

04Voice

Read aloud, in step

Built-in text-to-speech reads the text while the display follows the voice, word by word.

  1. The speech engine drives the display word by word, so the word you see is always the word you hear.
  2. The speech rate follows your words-per-minute setting.
  3. Pause and resume keep your place; seeking restarts the voice from the new word.
  4. Turn it on or off mid-session without losing your position.
  5. Pick the voice language. It keeps playing in the background.

07FAQ

Questions

Does speed reading really work?

RSVP removes the eye movements of normal reading: the word comes to your eye instead. Start near your usual speed (300 wpm is the default) and raise it step by step.

What is the highlighted letter?

The optimal recognition point (ORP): the letter your eye naturally fixates on. readz marks it in colour and always shows it at the same place, slightly left of centre, so only the word changes around it.

Is it free?

readz is in beta and free during the beta.

Do I need an account?

Yes, the same one as memo and every other waiyer app: one Google sign-in. Once signed in, reading works without a connection; your history syncs when you are back online.

Can I read a web page?

Yes. Share the page's link to readz: it fetches the page and keeps only the article text.

Which devices?

Android 5.0 and later, iOS 12 and later, and the web in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. “Readz it” in the selection toolbar is on Android; the share sheet works on Android and iOS.

Which languages?

The app is in English. Reading works with any language that separates words with spaces; read-aloud depends on the voices installed on the device.

What do you keep about me?

Your account's e-mail, name and picture, and, when the readz service can be reached, the texts you read, your reading sessions and your stats, so your history follows you. No analytics, no tracking, no advertising in the app.
